Dear Mr Presidentโฆ
ย
This letter isnโt to play politics,ย or to lambaste.
Iโm not taking sides โ there is no side.
Weโre Ghanaians.ย Thatโs our side.
Iโm a young adult from a middle class Christian family, who like the millions in this country,ย keeps wondering.
ย
I donโt believe that you are incapable of leading our country, as many have stated quite clearly.
Sometimes we get insubordinate in stating everything thatโs gone wrong, but itโs the love โ for we love Ghana,ย Oh so dearly!
ย
It is this love that makes the masses mad when things get out of handโฆ
Itโs this love that keeps people criticizing.
It is this same love that makes us hope that someday,ย somehow,ย something good will come out of Ghana.
So please donโt get mad. The masses mean well.
ย
I believe you are very capable,ย for the Good book says that โโฆthere is no authority except that which God has establishedโฆโ
ย
I cannot emphasize enough how badly things are going,ย for I know you see it all. It doesnโt make you incompetent, it only makes you a man challenged! A man challenged, I believe, stands up to the challenge,ย and beats it to the best of his callโฆ
I know that youโre not sitting idle as we mayย believe,ย but I feel thereโs a lot more you could do.
ย
I donโt know the slightest thing about leading a nation. I donโt know how itโs done.
Yet I believe you took up this position because you have some idea at least.
ย
When I was younger,ย my mother drummed in my head lessons on priority.
No TV when thereโs homework.ย
No naps when there are chores.
No breakfast when you havenโt prayed.
No Bible,ย definitely no breakfast.
ย
Priorities differ, naturally.
We donโt all hold the same things dear.
We donโt all have the same needs.
ย
But certain priorities are clearly universal.
Health above fame.
Quality over quantity.
Peace over war.
ย
I think it was quite interesting that a few weeks ago Ghana was offered to host theย African Cup of Nations,ย when weโre the most risked nation at the moment in this Ebola outbreakโฆ
I donโt know what the intentions were.ย Most of us donโt.
The rage that went up on the media was mainly because we were wondering if you were willing to sacrifice our health,ย for a little fame, and probably some sponsorshipโฆ?
ย
I also find it a bit interesting that certain things seem to be going on unnoticedโฆ.
Security systems failingโฆ. 12.6 kilograms of cocaine getting outside our borders somehowโฆ. and after seven trips.
Money disappearing in the โsystemโ, skyrocketing prices and cost of living,ย Parliament itself owing two years of electricity billsโฆ.
Multiple Strike actions that seem to go on and on and onโฆ..
A budget that makes us wonderโฆ
ย
For quite a while now weโve been having these โdumsorโ problems.ย And while we canโt blame you for that, we still have some questionsโฆ..
ย
Remember the uproar that went on when the power went out in parliament?
It just made me wish the speaker of parliament or his colleague MPโs could live in my public University room for just a day and attempt to undertake normal day โ to โ day activities.
Activities such as cooking, (the government hostels are only allowed to use electric cookers)ย washing (our water pumps are driven by electricity) and studying โ the reason for which we are in schoolโฆ.
ย
Mr President, the unity in the nation has dwindled beyond what should be. We cannot blame you,ย but I believe something can be done.
Kwame Nkrumah said once: โthe party and the nation are one and the sameโฆโ
Today, people think political affiliation,ย before thinking national patriotism.
People will do all the wrong there is to accumulate wealth because their party is in power, at the expense of the nation.
ย
In Barack Obamaโs words: โwhat holds this country together is this fundamental belief that we all have a stake in each other โ that I am my brotherโs keeper; that I am my sisterโs keeper. And that must express itself not only in our churches and synagogues or in our personal lives, but in our government too.โ
ย
Mr President,ย I believe that the good book alsoย mentions that though Saul was appointed by God, at a point he lost the presence of God,ย and with that the power to lead.
Please donโt lose the presence of God.
ย
It may not seem like it,ย but weโre solidly behind you.
Weโre bound by a common love for our nation.
We pray for you.
We care about you.
We just wish that somehow,ย you could reassure us, make a few things rightโฆ..
ย
We as citizens are going to try our best. Weโll take a cue from the Spaniards, who despite their economic trip to hell and back, stood behind their government and held on when they plunged to become the worst European economy.
Today, the story is different.
Weโll learn to support you while youโre in powerโฆ
Weโll try our very best!
With Love,
Lotus.
ย
P.S. Where is our Vice Presidentโฆ..?
Niiiiiiiiiiiccccceeeeee….. it’s hard not blame him but it’s true blaming n complaining has not really done much to help. the question we shd be asking what have we done to help.
๐ We can pray and hope….

Nice piece. Though the president is to be held accountable for whatever that goes on in the country, i believe every Ghanaian has a role to play in nation building. Let’s do our parts in our own little ways and hope for the best. Good work Elise.
Thanks Henry… Ghana is our home… we definitely have a lot to do as patriotic citizens!
This must certainly get to the president. Razor edged, focused and makes an exciting read. You clearly touched on the true, positive state of the well meaning Ghanaian, no bias, nation centred. Am proud of you, kudos Elise!
